WASHINGTON, D.C. (May 1, 2008) – Gilda’s Club Greater Washington’s (GCGW) annual Scarlet Ball honored DC First Lady Michelle Cross Fenty (at right) as the cancer support organization continues efforts to build a clubhouse in the District.
Named for late comedian Gilda Radner, Gilda’s Club (www.gildasclub.org) currently serves more than 50,000 members in 21 cities, with 30 clubhouses and satellites across North America, and nine additional locations in development.
The annual Scarlet Ball at The Willard Hotel feted Mrs. Fenty, wife of DC Mayor Adrian M. Fenty, for her efforts as president of the Advisory Council for the Capital Breast Care Center (CBCC), which provides breast cancer screening services for women without health care insurance and without a means to pay for screening. Georgetown University’s Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center opened the CBCC to address these needs in an affordable, compassionate way.

The mission of Gilda’s Club is to provide meeting places where men, women and children living with cancer, along with their families and friends, can join with others to build a personal network of social and emotional support as an integral part of cancer treatment.
Free of charge and non-profit, Gilda’s Clubs offer support and networking groups, seminars, workshops, specialized children’s programs and social events, in a nonresidential and home-like setting. Funding is solicited from private individuals, corporations and foundations.
Campbell, a cancer survivor himself, served as emcee for the event which featured a reception, silent auction and dinner.
